Summertime in the Carson Valley is normally hot and dry. With Daytime highs in the 90s and nighttime lows in the mid-50s, this is high desert living. You learn to love it. I grew up on the East Coast, where nighttime temperatures did not drop much at all. The nights would often feel just as hot as the day. This was due to the lovely humidity that I do miss from time to time. Here in the Carson Valley, this is true High-desert living at its best. Personally, this is the best kind of desert living, if you ask me.

Here in the High Desert, you have hot days and cool nights, with clear skies most of the time. There can be a random thunderstorm in July. Another magical aspect of living in the Carson Valley is having mountain views all around you. To the west, the Great Sierra Nevada; to the east, the rolling wild Pine Nut range. With an average Daily cloud cover of 65% throughout the year, we can still enjoy the change in the seasons and the amazing sunsets. The Carson Valley is known for its windy days. This seems to be especially in springtime. Different parts of the Valley experience more wind than others, so this is something to think about when buying. During winter storms, we can get very high winds; luckily, not too many trees drop branches. Or pinecones like Tahoe. Wind in Tahoe is much worse than the wind in the valley, if you ask me.

The nice part about being in Carson Valley, Nevada, is that temperatures tend to be more favorable for growing, with a Plant Hardiness Zone of around 7. Normally, the last frost is June 18th, and the first frost is around September 2. This allows plants to grow as long as you water them. That is the biggest drawback of high-desert living in Nevada. To have a nice yard or garden, you will need to use water. There are some plants that love it here. A plant that comes to mind is Russian Sage; it can take a lot of abuse; honey bees love it too.

With the Summer in the Carson/Minden area so hot and dry, you need to time your daytime activities accordingly. I recommend getting outside early in the day, or a nice afternoon sunset walk is one of my favorite times of the day to be out. If you are looking for something to do during the heat of the summer, the cold waters of Lake Tahoe are a quick, scenic drive away. Making this part of Northern NV a true Gem. When the night air in Tahoe becomes frigid, you drive back down to the valley, where the night air is perfection. Downtown Carson has a great little restaurant scene with a water fountain where kids can play, and sometimes they host live music. It’s a great place to end a day of Tahoe adventure before heading home.

One thing to note in the summer: Highway 395 southbound from Carson to Minden can get a little more congested. This is because so many people are moving into the area and more new developments are popping up every year. We have all noticed an increase in traffic. During summer, with so many tourists going to Tahoe, it feels even worse right now. If they could extend 580 south, that would help a lot. Maybe someday, who knows when it will be. Till then, we just need to remember: from 4:00 pm to 5:00 p.m. at the Highway 50 intersection going South to 395, you might hit a slowdown. Yet it is still NOTHING like the traffic you experience in larger cities like Reno. So I cannot complain too much. Just wanted to note it.
