What I wish I Knew before Moving West

Be careful what you wish for, they say. But the truth is simpler and far quieter: you really *can* manifest the life you envision. I built a life I am genuinely proud of—the triumphs, the scars, and everything in between. It was all worth the price of admission. I won’t pretend I live without regrets. I carry one, heavy and constant. But time has a way of softening edges. I’m beginning to understand that the things we mourn as mistakes are often just necessary turns in the road, showing us—slowly, gently—that things were meant to unfold this way all along.

I don’t want to say the wild west is a trap.  The thing is, the longer you stay, the deeper your roots sink, until leaving feels impossible. Yet the distance from the people who hold your heart doesn’t fade; it stretches and pulls. Time doesn’t make missing them easier—it just makes the miles feel heavier. If there is any wisdom I’ve bought with those miles, it’s this: hold tight to the people you love. Take every chance, steal every moment, to be near them.

I used to dream of a world where everyone I loved from the East Coast packed up and followed me into the sunset—a neat, happily-ever-after ending. But my dream is mine, not theirs, no matter how hard I tried.

It is funny that when you find a sanctuary, a quiet corner of the world that feels like a secret, you quickly learn you cannot keep it for yourself. What was once an overlooked refuge eventually becomes the place everyone is running to. Yet, despite the changing tides, one must keep moving forward. Hold fast to your purpose.

Will I ever leave this place? The state where my daughter took her first breath eighteen years ago? The land that has slowly eclipsed every other place I’ve ever rested my head? My journey here was long—from the woods of Connecticut to the mountains of Virginia, down through SoCal, up to the pristine cold waters of Tahoe, and finally settling into the wide-open grace of the Carson Valley. Maybe the search is over. Maybe I’m already where I belong. (And I certainly won’t complain about a life free from ticks and mosquitoes.)

*“Home Means Nevada.”*

It was just a state slogan, a phrase on a sign, a sentiment I was too young to grasp. It takes miles, years, and a few scars to truly understand it. But standing here now, looking out over this valley… I finally do.
